I came across this article written by Reiki Practitioner Pat Gray this week. It had been picked apart and dismantled for use in another blog. I felt that Pat deserved to have her work put back together and posted properly. You can learn more about Pat by clicking on her name below. After the article you will find a link to her Etsy shop (click on its name) where she sells some beautiful jewelry, such as the pendant pictured with this article.
How to Attune an Object with Reiki - Written by Pat Gray

Reiki is the ancient Japanese practice of balancing energy, and can also be used to “charge” or “empower” objects with healing, protective, positive energy. These objects can then be given as gifts to someone who needs a bit of a boost, used to increase the effectiveness of a healing session or placed around the home for protection or to improve situations. Any object can be charged – your car, a crystal or stone, your home, jewelry, a piece of paper with an affirmation.
Attuning an object with Reiki consists of three steps:
1) Cleansing
Some consider this an optional step, but may be useful depending on the issues being addressed and the object being attuned. For example in the case of a previously-owned object, clearing away old, possibly negative energy is essential. Cleansing healing stones after a treatment is also highly recommended. There are several methods for cleansing an object:
Saltwater “bath” – Soak the stone in a sea salt and purified water bath for several hours (use a glass bowl, not metal). Note: Do NOT use this method for porous stones.
Smudging – Burn a sage stick (some say white desert sage works best) or a frankincense or sandalwood resin-based incense stick, and hold the stone in the smoke for several minutes.
Sun or moon “bath” – Place the object in bright sunlight or in the light of a full moon (moonlight is especially effective for moonstone).
2) Charging
For Reiki Level 1 practitioners, simply holding the object or placing your hands on the object, and sending Reiki with intention and affirmations is enough for a simple, albeit temporary, object attunement.
Level 2 practitioners may infuse an object with a more powerful attunement through the use of the Reiki symbols. There are many different ways of charging an object with Reiki, and the general consensus is for the practitioner to follow their intuition.
Perhaps the most basic method is to wrap either Sei He Ki and/or Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen with Cho Ku Rei, again, sending Reiki with intention and affirmations into the object. Continue for at least five minutes, or until the energy flow dissipates – depending on the object and the intentions, it may take as long as 30 minutes.
3) Sealing
A specific sealing is considered optional, but it always necessary to close any Reiki session, and essential to thank your Reiki guides after charging an object.
According to Dr. Usui’s guidelines, Reiki energy is free, but you should always be compensated for your time, even when using Reiki on an object.
Some practitioners believe that Level 2 Reiki is required to charge an object – others believe Level 1 is sufficient. If, at Level 1, you feel capable to attune an object do so, but be honest (with yourself and others) about your abilities.
It may be possible to “sense” an object’s higher purpose – before cleansing or charging, it may be useful to get a feel for object’s native energy and purpose.
